Can you solve this riddle?

On Veteran's Day, U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant (2Lt.) Hasley was ordered to report to Captain (Capt.) Longley. On his way through the hallways, 2Lt. Hasley walked by a 1st Lieutenant, a Captain, and even a Major in rank. However, when 2Lt. Hasley walked into Capt. Longley's office, he immediately saluted the Captain and stated,"Lt. Hasley reports at ordered."

Why did 2Lt. Hasley salute Capt. Longley, but neglect to salute the other higher ranking officers that he passed in the hallway?
