Can you solve this riddle?

A truck is traveling south down the road after being filled up on gas. The truck, the driver and all his luggage weigh exactly 4 tons. About an hour later, he approaches a bridge with a sign that reads "WARNING: Bridge holds only 4 tons!" But the truck driver just drives right on. Once in the middle of the bridge, a seagull lands on the truck. Why does the bridge not collapse?
