Riddle

Victor was walking by the white house and saw what he thought was paint on the side walk, so he thought nothing of it. But as he walked he noticed the paint was getting thicker and that now insted of smearing it was in handprints. So he started to run to follow the handprints. When he stoped he saw a body laying there. No one was around so he went to the police. Later that week, the police came to his house and he was put in prison for the murder of the woman. How could the police have known that it was Victor?
