Can you solve this riddle?

There was an explorer who was exploring the Carribean Islands. He was captured by Native Americans. The Chief told the man he was going to give him some choices to decide his fate. If the explorer told the chief a false statement, he would throw him off the cliff. If he told a true statement, he would be eaten by sharks. If the explorer told him a statement that couldn't be answered, he would let him go. The explorer was let go un-harmed. What was the statement that he said to the chief to let him go?
