Can you solve this riddle?

A man was looking at railroad ties when a train came at full speed right torwards him. Then he ran 20 feet towards the train. Why did he do that?

There are two answers to this riddle. One is that he was on a bridge so he could not jump off the bridge. Another answer was that he was in a tunnel.
