Can you solve this riddle?

A man is hit by a massive amount of water. He looks up and finds he is under a bridge made two months ago. He then is nearly hit by a large piece of metal that fell from above him. The water flow then continues before he moves aside. What happened?

The bridge above him had a water pipe that leaked the first wave of water. Then it collapsed and the piece of metal fell. After that, the pipe emptied itself.
